ACUPUNCTURE

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an effective form of health care which has evolved into a complete and holistic medical system. The Chinese approach to medicine emphasized the concept of treating the body, mind, and emotions as an integrated whole. Practitioners of Chinese medicine have used this non-invasive medical system to diagnosis and help millions of people become well and stay well.

What is Qi?

At the core of this ancient medicine, is the philosophy that Qi or life energy, flows through the body. Qi like electricity cannot been seen but is the fuel that animates the body and protects it from illness, pain and disease. A person's health is influenced by the quality, quantity and balance of Qi.

How does Qi move?

Qi flows through specific pathways called meridians. Each of the 14 meridians are connected to specific organs and glands. Meridian pathways are like rivers flowing inside the body. Where a river flows it transports life-giving water that provides nourishment to the land, plants and people. Like rivers, where meridian pathways flow, they bring life-giving qi that provides nourishment to every cell, organ, gland, tissue and muscle in the body.

An obstruction to the flow of Qi is like a dam. When Qi becomes backed up in one part of the body, the flow becomes restricted in other parts. Hindering the flow of qi can be detrimental to a person's health, cutting off vital nourishment to the body, organs and glands.

What causes Qi to get stuck?

Physical and emotional trauma, stress, lack of exercise, overexertion, seasonal changes, poor diet, accidents, or excessive activity are some examples of things that can influence the quality, quantity and balance of qi.

Normally, when a blockage or imbalance occurs, the body easily bounces back, returning to a state of health and well-being. When this disruption is prolonged, repetitive, excessive, or if the body is in a weakened state, illness, pain or disease can set in.

"To live is to have Qi in every part of your body. To die is to be a body without Qi. For health to be maintained there must be a balance of Qi, neither too much nor too little." -Classical Chinese medical text, Nan-ching, 2ndC., AD

Karen's Statement of Purpose and Philosophy

I am an ambitious advocate for my patients- the result of my pre-medical undergraduate work followed by my post-graduate studies in traditional Chinese medicine and my clinical experience. My close proximity to medicine, growing up in family with my oncologist (cancer specialist) father, sensitized me for the focus and dedication that places patient welfare at the highest priority.

When I worked in the practices of Eastern doctors, my aspirations for treating and healing patients rose to a new and elevated level. Working with these forefront practitioners, whose specialties ranged form pain management, treatment of side effects from chemo and radiation therapy, and internal medicine, allowed me to learn about innovative treatments for many conditions.

I believe when I help facilitate the healing of another I am healing myself as well. There is no greater satisfaction then helping and serving people. My life's path into healing was from my own personal suffering. I have had many injuries and have been in and out of chronic pain. I have an understanding of how pain and illness can change your life and make you feel limited.

With a compassionate heart, healing hands and a listening ear, I guide my patients to health drawing on my knowledge and experience.
